Another Meritorious Act by GDR Graduates (in memory of deceased friends)
Sent by Dr. Jaya Perera
“Like in the previous year, the former GDR (German Democratic Republic) graduates conducted a religious ceremony to remember our deceased friend who studied with us in the former GDR, with the relatives and friends. We donated material including, milk powder, cloths & medicine to the orphanage & sponsored the Dhana to all those present on the 5th Sept 2009 at the Peter Weerasekera Orphanage in Yakkala (www.pwchildrenshome.org).
The Peter Weerasekara children’s home presently has 82 children in its care. It is a govt. approved charity and has been selected as one of the best run homes in the country. However they receive very nominal amount from the government and depends on donations. Last month they celebrated 50 th anniversary and Chief Justice was the chief guest.
We were able to conduct this activity because of the generous donations (over Rs 70000) received from our colleagues living abroad (USA, Germany, Bahrain, New Zealand, Australia) and from SL.
